I have a MacGreggor 26x, not the best boat in any category by any means, but I love it. I often get off work and rush to launch and get to a marina for the night, then later the next day or so raise the mast and sail if I'm not feeling totally lazy.

Anyway, under power, I get cold and wet when the bay is choppy. Sometimes, especially say around Alcatraz, it's pretty brutal. It can also get pretty cold and wet between Oyster Point and Candlestick.

I haven't found an online report of water conditions in terms of chops and such in the bay. Does anybody know of an easy way to get this type of information?

Currently, I'm just looking at the tides and wind conditions.

1) Low temperature in SF City and High temperature inland = high winds = chop
2) Low tide seems to be choppier
3) Changing tide (surge) is choppier (especially incoming surge)

Does this seem about right? Any other ideas?

I have just moved back to Vallejo from southern California. I own a Hobie 20 (which I race) and am looking for people who would like to get out and go Hobie sailing with me. Racing season is here, and I need to get out and get some practice this month before I start.

You must be:
a) fit
b) >170 lbs
c) kind of coordinated (this is a catamaran, you learn to wear a harness and stand off of the side)
d) not prone to panic (stuff happens fast because the boat goes really fast
e) not afraid of spending time in the water

- wetsuit owners and those with some catamaran or at least sailing experience preferred.
- if you weigh less than 150 and enjoy the experience you might get adopted as my new racing crew (my wife had a baby, so she is out for the season)

A sailing race from the San Francisco Bay into the open sea turned
deadly this weekend when two Marin County sailors and their boat
vanished in heavy swells.

One of the men's bodies washed up Sunday morning, while the other
remains missing.

The race from the Golden Gate Yacht Club in San Francisco to a buoy
about 12 miles west of the Golden Gate Bridge, began Saturday on a
clear winter morning marked by 12- to 16-foot swells and high winds,
authorities said. But when the three dozen competing boats finally
struggled back to port at the end of the day, the 32-foot Daisy was
missing.

The first clues to what might have happened emerged at 10:30 a.m.
Sunday when officials retrieved debris from the boat about 5 miles
west of the Golden Gate Bridge. And then, an hour later, the body of
one of the missing sailors, Anthony John Harrow, 72, of Larkspur, was
pulled out of the water at Moss Beach in San Mateo County, officials
said.

The other sailor, and owner of the boat, 68-year-old Matthew Kirby
Gale, has not been found. The Coast Guard suspended the search for
Gale on Sunday night.

] U.S. sailor dies in Mexico; boat aground

By MANUEL DE LA CRUZ, Associated Press Writer: A 78-year-old
California man was found dead in southern Mexico after his yacht ran
aground near shore, the U.S. Embassy said Sunday.

The body of a man believed to be John J. Long, of Alameda,
California, was found floating Saturday afternoon by his sailboat
near the town of Puerto Madero, just north of Mexico's border with
Guatemala, embassy spokeswoman Judith Bryan said.

It was unclear how Long died or why the vessel ran aground. Bryan
said he sent a distress signal from the boat "Culin," which bore
Irish, Mexican and U.S. flags. The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed its
Alameda center received an alert.

Authorities in Puerto Madero told the U.S. Embassy the boat may have
encountered electrical problems, she added.

Meanwhile, Mexican authorities were investigating whether the boat
was linked to organized crime or drug trafficking, after they
discovered a false bottom, presumably for cargo, said an official
with Mexico's navy who asked not to be named for security reasons. He
said Long was found with bruises all over his body.

Residents of a nearby town saw two people carrying suitcases leave
the boat, said Saul Gomez, head of a local fishermen's group.

Two people were detained in connection with the incident, state
police spokesman Bernardo Gomez said, but it was not clear if they
were the same pair seen exiting the boat.

Long was born in Ireland but was a U.S. citizen, Bryan said.

The "Culin," a 48-foot recreational boat, is registered under Long's
name in Alameda, according to the Web site Boatinfoworld. com, which
collects public records.

I just read the final edit manuscript of Dena Hankins' debut novel Blue Water Dreams and I just have to say; what a brilliant new talent this incredible young author is. Her characters are likable and intelligent with flaws and passions that are real and intense. Dena's grasp of the English language is clear and concise with a cutting sense of humor that is a true reflection of her times.

In 1999 at the ripe old age of 23 Dena Hankins bought her first boat , a William Garden designed Sea Wolf, a beautiful old 25 ton, 50 foot, ketch rigged wooden sailing ship that she named S/V Sovereign Nation. Dena has not only sailed the waters of the Pacific Ocean from the sheltered gunk holes of the Puget sound to the rocky cliffs of the Canadian Gulf Islands, In 2001 she sailed Sovereign Nation down the North American coast to the San Francisco Bay, an adventure that took 8 months to travel the 800 nautical miles that should have taken only 6 to 10 days and forever changed her life. In the San Francisco Bay, (while working a full time job as the warehouse Manager for a very successful on-line sex toy company) Dena, learned the fine art of sailing a cruising sailboat. In fact Dena and her partner James explored the entire Northern California coast from the Humboldt Bay to Monterrey as well as the California Delta in the Four Years that they called California home. In 2006 Dena sailed to the Big Island Of Hawaii and proved her salt as a Transpacific Pacific sailor with over 10,000 nautical miles under her belt by the time she completed a year long adventure exploring the Hawaiian archipelago. After making land fall in Hawaii she went to work on her first novel and completed the first manuscript in February of 2007.
Dena Hankins is an accomplished sailor, a passionate writer and an incredible example a woman who not only knows the value of a brilliant life but has the vision to share.

I truly believe that Denas fantastic adventure of how two people discover each other through discovering their dreams needs to be read so please help her find a publisher for this novel.
Please, if you have any good ideas about where she could go for mass publication please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just e-mail me here with any and all publishing ideas!
Prospective, newbie used boat owner wants to speak with current and past boat live-aboarders in the SF Bay area. I live ( on land ) in the SF East bay, a few miles from the Berkeley Marina.

Hi. I have recently become attracted to & curious about owning & living aboard what would be my first, very affordable boat. Given my very small budget as a student, & being self-employed in a financially unpredictable field( body worker - aka massage therapist - & qigong instructor ), I am looking at very affordable boats under $5000, at least for now, which could be relatively comfortable for living aboard. Am open to even paying monthly fees up to this amount toward purchase of a compatible boat in need of no major repairs / work and slip as well.

A couple requirements would be running water ( including hot for stand up - or at least high squatable - showers which do not flow water all over the inside of the boat, dish & hand washing ), indoor toilet, standing room at least in some areas for a bit more than just a pirouette, electricity ( to run a notebook computer, basic lights for reading / seeing, clock,), ability to cook basic, small meals like oatmeal, steamed veggies, toaster oven for small baking, and shelving for the many books i have & enjoy reading, studying.

Am considering living on a boat in part to save money ( if actually possible to pay under $350 / month total for boat situation compatible with my needs & interests ) while in school and building my love of bodywork & qigong into a profitable business, in addition to loving the feel of being around water.

Reading related on-line publications, website and blogs has been a bit useful so far. And it will likely be a while before i can save even $5000 at this point.

But it feels like what could really help in feeling out whether this is what I really want to do & potential used boats that could work for my needs, is to relate in person with individual boat owners who would be open to sharing their experiences, suggestions & physically seeing & feeling various boats insides as well as exterior, meeting & relating in person with people already doing what I am curious about.
( All communications with me, boaters situations & identities will be treated as private & confidential communications - of course. )

Anyone interested & open to this, send me an email?.

Has anyone in this forum ever sailed there? I would really like to hear about your experience. Also, on a completely different subject, I have a cng system with a rusted out tank.
Same goes for the handrails, I want to make my own and was thinking of doing a bent lamination.

I work at Paradis park in Tiburon, so I would really like to be able to anchor off shore and dinghy into work on occasion. To make this all possible, I need to know two things. What should I be looking for in a generator? I would like to be able to hook it into the boats electrical system to allow for lighting and battery charging. I am not all that concerned about the refrigerator. I figure I can just put some dry ice in there from time to time. I am just wondering what sort of a connection makes this possible. Also does anyone here have any experience anchoring off of paradise? I am wondering how nervouse I should be about anchor drag.

Right now I can see a couple options,
possibly finding a Live-Aboard slip somewhere in the bay, Marina Bay is what I am gathering would be the best bet
or trying to get my classes down to only a couple days a week and just sailing around in the middle of nowhere when I don't need to be in town
I know I'm ignorant but I'd like to figure out a way to live on a sailboat and go to school in SF with my cat if I can.
Any suggestions?
I wish to sell my 26' sailboat due to financial hardships. This boat is in charter service and has a positive cash flow every month, after all expenses except for the monthly bank loan. The charter operator wishes to keep the boat in their fleet, and has even made an offer to purchase. I'm trying to figure out the value, but don't find any comparable sales on the west coast of this particular boat. Any suggestions will be appreciated, especially an offer to purchase ;-).

I'm doing this for fun, not because I plan to devote every weekend of my life to races. I'd like to be able to charter a 30-40-footer several times a year to go out on the bay and enjoy the good life with friends. I do have some experience, even an Australian Yachting certification, but I'd like to get the U.S.-necessary papers so chartering a boat will be hassle-free. The problem seems to be that doing just that seems to be rather tricky - I mean, I am a private pilot and learning to fly and renting an aircraft has fewer catches and seems to be cheaper than sailing! Most clubs try to trick you into serious membership stuff with dubious initiation fees, excessive monthly dues, and high rental fees unless you committ your life and earnings up front in order to get some discounts. So, the question is whether or not there are learn-to-sail places at the SF Bay where I can first learn to sail, qualify, slowly upgrade my certifications, have fun along ther way, and maybe *then* decide to join for good if I really do like the place, the people, and the sailing? (in case you wondered, this post applies to OCSC Sailing, Club Nautique, Spinnaker, etc. pp. - I did perform a little bit of homework.)

Jimmy Buffett is coming to town April 25th at Shoreline, Do you want to go?
I’ve got “first dibs” on some reserved seats (seats, not lawn space) for this sold out show, and I thought I’d see if anyone is interested in going to the concert.

There is one pair of tickets available at only $195 per ticket. Since it is a sold out concert, tickets on the secondary market that I’ve seen on-line are going from $170 for the cheaper seats, all the way up to over $1,000 per ticket for front row center seats! The ones I can get are hard tickets, not e-tickets. They are located at:
Section 202 (center) – Row T – seats 21 and 22

These are pretty good seats in the center section, and I can get them for $390 for the pair, so if you are interested, please let me know ASAP by e-mail or by cell phone.
e-mail: FunHappens@earthlink.net
If you are serious about going, it’s best if you call me on my cell at 415-377-3107.

You can take a look at the seating chart to see where they are located by going to the Shoreline website:

So some friends and I take these sailing vacations once or twice a year. We fly someplace cool, charter a biggish sailboat (I'm a certified skipper), and island-hop for a week or two.

In April we're going to the Bahamas, and have a few spots left as some folks we were expecting won't be able to make it. Are you interested?

We sail from Marsh Harbour, Great Abaco, Bahamas on Saturday, April 15, returning Sunday, April 23. There'll be 8 of us on a 47' catamaran (4 double cabins, each with its' own bathroom). See the links below for more info about the boat + location. Cost will be $1700 per person, which includes the boat charter and provisioning (meals/drinks aboard the boat) - anything you spend ashore for meals/drinks/souvenirs is extra.

A little about us: we're all around 30 (+/- a few years), mostly tech professionals, mostly male (the ladies aren't able to make it). We're laid back, easy-going, good senses of humor.

What to expect: sailing experience is NOT required. The sailing itself is typically not very demanding on these trips. But they are a bit like camping - we're pretty self sufficient. If you have experience camping for 2+ nights, you could consider that pretty good preparation for this. We all pitch in now and then to help with cooking, the dishes, or keeping the boat clean. We usually sail for 2-3 hours/day, then drop anchor/moor/dock somewhere. It might be at a deserted white sand beach, or it might be at some small town where we can explore. It might be a short stop for lunch and snorkelling, or an overnight parking job. The itinerary and pace are entirely up to us.

Mostly what IS required is a good perspective - be open to new experiences and people, don't be tied to outcomes, don't take things too seriously or personally (don't be a music snob--or any kind of snob), appreciate the independence and amazing beauty that comes with exploring these places outside of a tour group and off the beaten path--as well as the occasional inconveniences that are the price of that independence. :)

We're pretty equal-opportunity: singles/couples, male/female, straight/gay/whatever, it's all good. None of us going so far are smokers. We're not snobs about it, but if you smoke (cigs), we'll kindly ask you to do it on the most downwind part of the deck.

Wanted 1 or ? persons for crew aboard a Rawson30 for local SF bay and Mexico and other warm destinations. I'm sailing from San Francisco California to Mexico and beyond beginning Oct of 2006. I have sailed coast wise and San Francisco bay for several years I have owned the boat more than 10 years and I have been sailing since 1980. I consider myself and my vessel to be well founded for this venture. The boat will under go an extensive re-fitting over the summer. Upgrades and equipment will be installed by me. I will haul out in Berkeley then live on the hook to save money and finish preparations till there is a good weather window. Help is required in the form of elbow grease and tactfully telling the skipper that he's doing stupid things when you really think he is. Day sails and shake down cruises will be happening as soon as the boat is back in the water. I would like to make weekends mandatory but that is not always realistic, just show commitment to the voyage and a willingness to bust butt getting the boat and yourself ready. I am happy to teach and take on new sailors. Compatibility is key as this is not a big boat. Everything else can be taught. You will be allowed 1 duffle bag and you are expected to cover your personal expenses. Provisioning and accommodations will be modest but not Spartan. Input as to crew comfort and improvements are encouraged.

Day sail crew will be casual and friends are encouraged to just show up with a small bag and sun block. Shake down cruises may require more of a time commitment (a long weekend) as we are testing gear in ocean conditions (if it breaks you could be late for work). Committed crew gets first priority. Priority is based on time committed to cruising itinerary and bust butt factor. Couples are welcome as long as you have a stable relationship.

Contraband will not be tolerated at any time. Any illegal activity by the crew the captain may be held responsible for the crews conduct by authorities and the vessel forfeited. Offending individuals will be sent home or marooned as deemed necessary by the Captain. The definitions of contraband are, but not limited to, the following.

#1 Substance Abuse:
Any substance that is illegal in territorial waters of the country which has claim to those waters. Or deemed illegal by international law.
Debilitating or excessive alcohol consumption.
#2 Romantic advances: (It's a small boat it happens)
Un-wanted romantic advances toward other crew members will be dealt with in the harshest terms.
Advances directed toward the captain will be accepted gracefully if not reciprocated.
Reciprocated advances are not contraband.
#3 Excessive drama: is contraband. (See marooning)

Disputes may arise between individual crew members. Or between the captain and other crew members. If in the event an equitable compromise or resolution cannot be found a properly supervised round of rock, paper, scissors will be the deciding factor (best 2 out of 3). The captain has final word in all disputes with regard to safety and navigation and vessel operations (sorry it's my boat).

Note*** The best way to get on the crew list at this point is e-mail me directly and I'll give you my phone# michealb98@yahoo.com

Hey all,

I'm looking for crew. I don't have a boat, but I belong to Club Nautique -- my usual MO is to charter a boat for the day (or weekend) and tool around the bay. Usually 35-50', usually 6-10 people aboard, usually more about cruising than performance sailing, but sometimes a little competition is fun. We leave in the late morning, lunch aboard, spend the afternoon cruising around, tie up for dinner/drinks ashore, and motor home after dark. We split the cost of the charter - it usually works out to about $60/person for a pretty full day. Of course, I'm always open to suggestions, too.

I have my US Sailing certifications through CoNav, and am considering Coastal Passagemaking. Finding a sailing buddy who is very interested in doing CPM would probably convince me to do it too.

I'm told I'm a decent skipper - I'm safety-conscious but also pretty laid back. I've got probably a hundred days or so skippering on the bay and a few dozen in other parts of the world.

The CN boats are all newish and in good condition. Hunters, Jeanneaus, a Gib Sea or two.

I also love overnights inside the bay and 3-day trips to Catalina (from LA). Naturally there's a little more togetherness on these trips, so we all have to be a bit more compatible than on a daytrip.

And if we REALLY get along, I organize at least one sailing charter a year (1-2 weeks) in places like the British Virgin Islands, Croatia and Greece (so far). On the plate for this year are the Bahamas and Tonga.

I generally prefer to sail with sailors (or aspiring sailors) rather than passengers. This distinction is about attitude, not expertise! You don't have to have any sailing experience, but you do have to be at least interested in sailing, reasonably able-bodied, and willing to learn.

In fact, I usually wind up being the most experienced sailor on these outings. I don't mind that, I like to teach, but I'd also like to find some more experienced sailors who're interested in teaching me a few things. There's always more to learn, after all! Bonus points if you can help me refine my sail trim (especially on these big cruisers :).

I'm pretty laid back and drama free, and I look for the same in my crew. Sh*t happens when you're sailng, and if you cling to outcomes or have too many expectations, you're bound to be disappointed, frustrated, or both. There's usually some alcohol and sometimes some 420 on my trips, but all in moderation. We're not irresponsible about it, but neither are we uptight.

Equal opportunity skipper here - m/f, str8/gay, it's all good. I'll give anything a try, but history says we'll probably get along best if you're around 25-35ish. More bonus points if you're a fan of Dave Matthews and/or Jack Johnson, and especially if you _get_ them.

I haven't put much time into my tribe profile - sorry about that. I was kinda burned out on social networking sites when I signed up and haven't gotten motivated since. You can read a little bit more about me at http://www.face-pic.com/rudling .

I usually send invites out a few days to a week before the outing. If you're interested in being on my crew list, or have questions, please drop me a line - matt@well.com is my email.

Cheers!
-Matt

I wouldn't mind getting involved in the fall race series but can probably only crew on the weekends as I travel for work a lot during the week.

Please let me know if you have any crew spots available!

Have a great day!

Here is a weekend sailing report from the International 14 community. Check these guys out if you want to see some absolutley crazzzy action.

We had 8 boats race this weekend at the BVBC Dinghy Regatta held south of the Bay Bridge. Saturday started out with a postpone until the wind arrived and then we had a downwind sail out to the race course in light air. Once there though it didn't take too long for the expected breeze to fill in and it ramped pretty rapidly to about 15 knots for the start of the first race and was higher towards the end. The conditions were great: excellent breeze, warm water, and bright sunny skies. The first race was a triangle-windward/leeward with a tough reach mark to make. Race 2 was a W/L in around 20 knots, and the water was not quite as flat as I expected but I guess my expectations were too high. There were plenty of capsizes with which to entertain the RC (and they wanted to know: "why don't you guys drive down under the kite when you start to get out of control?" :) Race 3 was held in diminished winds (15?) and was apparently rather nice although by then it was a match race between Dr. Evil and Paul (umm, sorry, I don't know who bested who). Most crews made it back to BVBC for beers, dinner and an Olympic style medals presentation on a podium made of beer cases. Awards for the day: Paul/Guillo (Gold), Brad (Silver), and Kurt/Lawrence(Bronze). Evening festivities continued on Greg's recently purchased Express 37, which we loaded up with about 14 adults and 6 children and took to view the Ka-Boom fireworks.

Sunday the breeze was on much earlier, good for us that the RC was on 14 time, as we were all running a shade late. Particularly good for me since I sailed about 2 miles past the race course - thankfully it was a blast reach back. We got in 2 races, both in about 20ish with some puffs to about 25. Again, lots more capsizes, a reach mark from hell, and some tough gybes down by the leeward mark next to the container ship.

I don't have the full results from Sat, but I did make it back to BVBC on Sunday to pick up the final as well as Sunday's results:

Overall for both days:
1st Paul/Guillo
2nd Brad/Patrick
3rd Kurt/Lawrence

Details for just Sunday (order of finish):
Race 1
1145 - Kirk/Jonathan
1161 Brad/Patrick
1147 Paul/Guillo

Race 2
1111 Kurt/Lawrence
1161 Brad/Patrick
1145 Kirk/Jonathan
1147 Paul/Guillo
1131 Bob Hyde

Sunday Overall
1145 Kirk/Jonathan
1161 Brad/Patrick
1147 Paul/Guillo

I'd have the Sunday medals but John gave ours to the FD's so he's to arranging a swap...
went out with the main sail double reefed, and a reefed genoa -- was perfect! flew across the bay to sf in front of angel island and alcatraz. i was heeled over a little bit, had good speed and control. very few people on the water because of the bad weather predictions.

but it was warm and fantastic on the bay! i was in my shorts and short sleeved shirt, chuckling at the people dressed in foul weather suits.

Monday afternoon -- ahh really blowin hard. white cap land (with gusts up to 30 knots i found out later). i decide to take a quick sail, since its going to be raining for a few days. start out with just a double reefed main and i'm honkin. do some laps in richardson bay, each time poking my nose a little further into the slot.

I convince myself that the wind is lessening so i can put up the reefed genoa. do some laps with way too much sail, fun but... next time i'll use the smaller jib !

this weekend should be great for sailing !! sunny, highs in the 70s with 10-20 knots of wind, no brutal ebb tides either.

just joined tribe, would like to connect with other bay area sailors, boaters, rowers....

for the past few months i've been working and staying on a 26 foot sailboat that is anchored out in richardson bay (sausalito) california. it is a contessa 26 -- made famous in the book 'maiden voyage', the diary of an 18 year old girl who sailed one around the world. although small at 26 feet, and they are very hardy boats that have a full keel. they are a british design that is modeled after traditional 'folk boat' sailboats.

i sailed a few times when i was a kid with my dad -- wineglass and a hobie cat. but i didn't see my dad too often growing up so didnt really have that much experience. so the past few months have been accelarated sailing and maritime lessons!

for sailing i've pretty much just gone across the bay in front of angel island, in front of the bridge, etc. sailing around richardson bay is really fun as well. i singlehand and also bring out friends/crew. i need more equipment to go ocean sailing but its definitely what i'm working towards.

i really like not being in a slip, i love rowing on the bay and seeing the seals. and of course flying with too much sail, heeled over and grinnin'
I have always had a love affair with sailing, but oddly enough I still have yet to learn how. Since I'll be moving to upstate New York soon, I plan on earning my sailing chops out on the Finger Lakes. In the meantime, I'm simply looking for some more sailing exposure. I'd like to buddy up with people for a afternoon cruise, or help out with some dry land repairs. Just about anything where I can learn about the Tao of Sailing, so to speak.

I'm looking at buying a boat that's currently docked at the Berkeley Marina. The boat needs a little work, so I figured the first thing I would do would be to haul it out and go over the entire boat, sand it, prep it and paint it, and fix whatever needs to be fixed. I just have a few questions:

1. Where can I haul out to? Does Berkeley Marina have a dry dock where people can work on their boats?

2. Does anyone have any reccomendations for someone to paint or know if the Dry Dock at Berkeley Marina allows people to paint their boats on the premises?

3. Does anyone have experience in any of the above and can offer any advice I would greatly appreciate (boat overhaul, sanding, fiberglass repair etc?)

Thanks!
