Diesel Mechanic in Oakland ?

topic posted Mon, December 24, 2007 - 4:35 PM by  Salty
I have a Westerbeke W46 that just developed a starter problem. Svendsen's is too busy, and suggested I look elsewhere.

Any suggestions?

Boat is in Embarcadero Cove.

Might call List Marine in Sausalito. They are my favorite bunch of mechanic's in the whole wide world. If your batteries, cables, connections, selinoid, ect. are good I would pull the starter and take it to Rightway and have them rebuild it or exchange it for a rebuilt or new one. I would only let a real deal shop with a storefront and insurance work on my boat or I would do it myself. Sometimes your money ahead paying the 100 an hour shop rate and waiting until they have time rather than letting a dude from the marina do it. I've seen a lot of hack jobs happen on the waterfront. Nigel Calder has a great book on diesel engines and troubleshooting.

Wonder how you would feel if I posted the main problem with your profession or trade was to find a good and honest one who practiced it. Almost all people have some pride in what they do and do their trade or profession well. I would say the main problem of marine engine problems is neglect from the owner. Then asking someone else to work on the rusty washing machine and then being bent when they charge a fair price for parts and labor.
