I want to use Sapele (a form of mahogony) for the trim on my little Balboa but I can only get 4/4 stock (or at least I get that cheap) and so I need some 5/4 stock. Titebond III is supposed to be waterproof but I was wondering if I was just better off using expoxy?
Same goes for the handrails, I want to make my own and was thinking of doing a bent lamination.
If anyone sails out of Hidden Harbor, drop me a line as well. Don't laugh but I have only been sailing once and have a LOT to learn!

Re: Laminating exterior trim
Mon, May 14, 2007 - 11:09 PMUse epoxy. It likes a bit of a gap, so instead of planeing or sanding surfaces to be glued, I leave to saw kerf marks. Titebond would be OK for interior stuff. Then again, teak can be oily and not take glue well. It pays to do a little tester for glue or finish. -

Tue, May 15, 2007 - 1:19 PMYes, stick with the epoxy. West makes a non-photochemically reactive sort, hence it won't go bright yellow on you in the sun. Mahogany also has a lot of oil (why it is resists rot) and epoxy is better there too, and the Tightbond won't hack the exterior enviornment. -

Re: Laminating exterior trim
Tue, May 15, 2007 - 1:22 PMBy the way, if you want to talk wood, drop by Handloggers in Richmond. Tim, what is his name again? Used to be at Tiki Junction in Sausalito, 'till the rent went through the roof, then Larkspur, now Richmond. Think his name was Tim too. Tell him Erik Christiansen, Glenn's son, friend of Babe, sent you. Might work, if he remembers me. Good luck. Ya got a band saw, and a good router table? -

Tue, May 15, 2007 - 2:31 PMI have a decent shop and can resaw up to 12". I teach gunstock making classes at Woodcraft and can use their shop so what few tools I don't have like a thickness sander I can always use theirs.
I figured on using System Three expoxy? -

Tue, May 15, 2007 - 10:13 PMHandloggers moved to Richmond. Anyway after going over the Richmond San Rafeal bridge I would see their sign on the right hand side of the freeway. If you know someone with a port supply account with West Marine, they can get you a substantial discount on the West system kit. I like West system because all the fillers are right there for it, like miroballons and such. Tap plastics has some different products, you can get glass mat and such there. You may end up doing some fiberglass work or at least filling some holes in your boat before your project is through.
Nice to hear from Erik. He's always off with some total babe. He advised me to always sail to where it's warm. He said, people wear fewer clothes and the divorce rate is lower. Here I am, sitting in Alaska on my boat. Guess I didn't take his advice. -

Wed, May 16, 2007 - 3:08 AMHahaha. Heard you got divorced too. Sorry about that. But, just a little ironic. Hope you are back on an even keel. Hey, Irene Bedard, is a native Alaskan, any more like her up there?
I'm sitting in Warsaw. No water (well the Wisla river and a bunch of lakes) for over 300 KM. I'll be back in Bandol, South of France, in late Summer though. Great sailing. The lake sailing in Northern Poland is supposed to be fabulous too. Ever see Polanski's "Knife in the Water"? Now that was a fucked up onboard relationship. Polish women are so hot though.
John Connolly of Modern Sailing Academy, is doing adventure sailing out of Corfu right now. He's actually going to come by and visit me in Warsaw, between classes, next week. Guess I'll have to try and hook him up with a girl. LOL. -

Re: Laminating exterior trim
Wed, May 16, 2007 - 10:53 PMYeah, I saw Polanski's movie and it was great, I want to buy it for my collection. My divorce had some outside help, but I'm trying to be over it. It's been almost two years now and I'm trying to be all spiritual and shit and forgive.
Alaska is great, the openess, mountains and wildlife. Probably not the dating scean as France and Poland, but hey I'm joyfully single and I still have my dog Jack. Seems like there is plenty of women in Juneau, I'm sure one will be in my life when the time is right.
