Hi all,
I have a MacGreggor 26x, not the best boat in any category by any means, but I love it. I often get off work and rush to launch and get to a marina for the night, then later the next day or so raise the mast and sail if I'm not feeling totally lazy.
Anyway, under power, I get cold and wet when the bay is choppy. Sometimes, especially say around Alcatraz, it's pretty brutal. It can also get pretty cold and wet between Oyster Point and Candlestick.
I haven't found an online report of water conditions in terms of chops and such in the bay. Does anybody know of an easy way to get this type of information?
Currently, I'm just looking at the tides and wind conditions.
1) Low temperature in SF City and High temperature inland = high winds = chop
2) Low tide seems to be choppier
3) Changing tide (surge) is choppier (especially incoming surge)
Does this seem about right? Any other ideas?

Mon, May 26, 2008 - 12:45 AMHowdy. I like to bring friends out with me and a rough day rarely makes a good impression. Not to mention I like to keep things mild to given my fairly novice skills. Just by observation, I have determined it is fairly calm on the bay until noon and picks up until late afternoon (6 ish) after that the bay is generally pretty pleasant. Not claiming to be an expert by any means, this is just a rule I have begun to plan my trips around.

The bay is very complex and changeable. Lots and lots of experience is the best teacher. Different parts of the bay vary wildly as to chop, wind, current, air temp, water temp, fog, fishing, etc. You can find at least 6 different kinds of chop just between the St. Francis YC and the Bridge - and it changes hourly!
A very good discussion is printed in the latest Latitude 38 - the one with the giant catamaran flying a hull on the cover. It's online here:
